Alexander Hawkins, Hunter Diamond/Mike Reed duo
Doors: 8:00PM | Show: 8:30PM
SET 1: Alexander Hawkins – piano
A rare Chicago performance by composer, pianist, and organist
Alexander Hawkins. Working in a vast array of creative contexts, his own highly
distinctive soundworld is forged through the search to reconcile both his love
of free improvisation and profound fascination with composition and structure.
He is a frequent solo performer, and also appears in groupings ranging with vast array of contemporary leaders of all generations, including the likes of Evan Parker, John Surman, Joe McPhee, Wadada Leo Smith, Marshall Allen, Mulatu Astatke, Han Bennink, Hamid Drake, Michael Formanek, Rob Mazurek, Taylor Ho Bynum, Harris Eisenstadt, Matana Roberts, Angelika Niescier, and Shabaka Hutchings, amongst many others. For over a decade, he has also been noted for his performances in the bands of legendary South African drummer, Louis Moholo-Moholo.
SET 2: Hunter Diamond - saxophone, clarinet, percussion & Mike Reed – drums
A Record release performance for "Nilia"
(CUR003) to be released on 12.3.21.
Recorded in mid-March of 2020, just as the world was officially shutting down, this series of raw improvised duets animates a moment in anticipation of the unknowns to come. Wild and tattered phrases unfold narratives of a growing musical kinship interconnected with past and current waves of Chicago creative music.
