Cash Cash, BB Guns
Control Presents at Avalon Hollywood
In today’s world of electronic music, there are few rules. Artistsare freer than ever to write, record, and color outside the lines. For CashCash, the New York City based group known for their infectious dance music, this is the creative, anything-goes climate they’ve been waiting for.
Cash Cash is an electronic music trio originally hailing fromthe Garden State and currently signed to Big Beat/Atlantic Records. The groupconsists of brothers Jean Paul Makhlouf and Alex Makhlouf, as well as life-longfriend Samuel Frisch. Together, the three DJ/Producer/Multi-instrumentalistsrecord, mix and master all of their music.
Having released four full-length albums and an array of EPs andsingles, the trio continues to blur thelines between genres. In the midst of creating their extensive catalog ofcharting originals, they have also found success producing and co-writingKrewella's "Live for the Night,” along with producing official remixes formajor artists such as Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson,David Guetta, Hardwell and many others. Their latest full length album “Blood,Sweat &3 Years,” is Cash Cash’s way of bringing music listeners from allgenres together under one rattling roof. JP Makhlouf stated, “Our goal was tomerge different styles from hip hop, rock, and pop with electronic dancemusic.” An ambitious and intense project that took 36 months to complete, the LP blends tear-jerkinglyrics, expressive synths, thunderous basslines, and the group’s signatureinfectious melodies. It also showcases their knack for pushing familiar voices into new territories with astar-studded lineup of A-list guests including John Rzeznik of the GooGooDolls, Nelly, Christina Perri, Bebe Rexha, Busta Rhymes, B.o.B, Trinidad James, and many more.
“We hate buying an album if it all sounds like one song,” JPsays. “The same synths, the same drums, the same moods. We get excited when wehear something untraditional. Musically, that’s what we are after.” To getthere, they insisted on taking the long road. It would’ve been easy to tradetracks over email between tour stops, but they felt proper studio sessionswould inspire a deeper level of collaboration with the featured artists. JPsays this approach was “a lesson in patience, thus the album’s title,” but theonly way to land on something truly new. “A lot of DJs never even meet theirfeatures, they just trade stems and acapellas over e-mail until someone decidesit’s ready,” JP says.
“That style of working doesn’t compare to being in the studiowith Nelly, chain smoking blunts and drinkingCrown Royal until 5 a.m. We brought the majority of the features on our albuminto our home studio to record, and made priceless memories with them in theprocess. I remember after we recorded Christina Perri, we took her on a tour ofNew Jersey, showing her all the famous spotsthey filmed ‘The Sopranos.’ It’s moments like that which made this albumextremely meaningful to us.Recording gang vocals with John Rzeznik on our song “Lightning” in our house was another moment we’ll never forget, being alternative music listeners. When we recorded “Broken Drum” with Fitz & TheTantrums, it was just a hot summer day in Jersey filled with good vibes in the Garden State at ourpool.”
Those all-nighters in the studio seem to be paying off sincethey found crossover success with their RIAA-certified platinum electro-popanthem “Take Me Home feat. Bebe Rexha,” which has been streamed more than 100million times. As of 2017, their catalog of music made them one of the top 200most streamed artists on Spotify worldwide. Their follow up single “Surrender” also broke US Top 40 radio and reached#1 on US dance radio. The group’s success extended beyond their home turf after achievingplatinum, gold, and silver records in countries such as Canada, the UnitedKingdom, and Australia. “Millionaire,” their dancehall-infused summer anthem withNelly, gained over 50 million streams and views. JP says the pinch-me momentcame when the rap legend decided to add his signature “must-be-the-money” vocalstamp into the song. The nostalgicthrowback was unexpected, but fit perfectly with the rest of the album whichmakes distinct and sometimes familiar voices feel fresh and new.
“The thing that unites the album is the songwriting,” JP says.“We spend as much time producing the music as we do writing it, from chords andrhythms to lyrics and melody, because we truly enjoy the whole process. “Whenwe first heard Bebe’s voice, she was the opposite of a cookie-cutter singer so we knewimmediately that we wanted to work with her,” JP says. “And it changedeverything. Suddenly we were working with rappers and artists of all styles.“Rather than trying to bring everyone back to the same old sound, we got tofocus on making new ones. It felt like we finally found what we were best at.”
The trio grew up together in northern New Jersey playing variousinstruments in bands and recording in their basement studio. As they evolvedfrom an electronic band to a production group in 2011, they quickly establishedthemselves as musical risk-takers whose imaginative song structures andenergetic live shows caught the attention of heavy hitters in the musicindustry. By2012, they had released music through Universal Music Group, EMI,and iconic Dutch dance label Spinnin’ Records.
Cash Cash took on a nonstop touring schedule since 2008, leadingthe group to sell out various headline tours around the world including their“Untouchable” and “Must Be The Money” tours in2015 & 2016. Their touringhistory also includes a laundry list of main stage festival sets and their ownheadline residencies in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. For Cash Cash, thecollaborating doesn’t stop in the studio, as they continue to bring theirfeatures and outside artists to theirs hows. Their guests have included artistssuch as Wiz Khalifa, Busta Rhymes, French Montana, Rae Sremmurd, ILoveMakonnen,Bebe Rexha, Lil Dicky & E40. Their new 2017 residency with Hakkasan Group has the trio in LasVegas frequently across venues Hakkasan, Jewel, WetRepublic and Omnia; startingthe next chapter of Cash Cash.
