Guitarist and composer Dave Miller has been a prominent fixture in the Chicago creative music scene for nearly two decades. Since his last album’s release (Dave Miller, Tompkins Square 2020), Miller has led a quartet with legendary drummer, Jeff “Tain” Watts, performed at Chicago’s Symphony Hall with Greg Ward’s Rogue Parade, and held down the guitar chair for Terence Blanchard’s masterful opera, Fire Shut Up In My Bones at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. On the heels of these accomplishments, Miller has taken a musical right turn, positioning his guitar playing front and center on his new album, Daughter of Experience (Tompkins Square, 6/3/22). The material on Daughter was written/arranged during a two week retreat to the Catskill Mountains and eventually recorded at his Chicago-based studio, Whiskey Point Recording, entirely on an antique acoustic parlor guitar. The resulting unedited performances, stark and vulnerable, capture much of the feeling he experienced while in communion with the natural beauty and rich musical history of the Catskill region.

Chicago based bassist/composer and bandleader, Matt Ulery, has developed an instantly recognizable sound. Known for his sweeping lyricism, unconventional phrase structures, expressionistic emotionalism, Ulery’s music, from small, diverse chamber ensembles to full orchestras, is informed by the entire spectrum of jazz, classical, rock, pop, and folk– specifically American, South American, Balkan, and other European folk styles. In this concert, along with Chicago-based KAIA String Quartet, he’ll perform sludgy, romantic music for strings, Viscous.
