Event Details

"The apparent separation between Algerian roots, American modernism and French chanson finds a common ground in Ourida’s avant-garde songwriting – powerful presence, sultry voice. She is a French-Algerian songwriter, singer, pianist, ukulele player, and a Brooklyn resident with multiple uprootings.

After winning awards and grants in France, performing for years in Parisian clubs and venues (la boule noire, le divan du monde) and various festivals (musiques du monde, fête de l'humanité), she was invited to play solo in Canada and Brazil, and released her first album ‘Monkeys’ before moving to New York City, where she played regularly in trio with Jonathan Levy on bass and Joe Hertenstein on drums, in the most artistically diverse and experimentally creative clubs (Lunatico, Nublu, Drom, Rockwood…).

Critically acclaimed in Europe by the Parisian Radio Nova for her powerful stage presence, by l’Humanite for her “Rickie Lee Jones” style,  by French Morning for her lyrics “playing with our emotions,”  by the UN Day’s chairman after many years playing at the Brooklyn Borough Hall - “Ourida’s beautiful and inspiring music and lyrics evokes the powerful role of women in our society. She is a unique talent’ -  her collaborative work with Ben Zwerin and Raed el-khazen was selected by Unsigned Only 2021 and she's now releasing her new album ‘Wings’.

Produced by Eli Crews (tUnE-yArDs, Marc Ribot…) featuring Kane Mathis on oud and other virtuosos, ‘Wings’ is an indie pop / art pop / alternative album of sensual songs full of imagery, translating emotions as directly as movies do, about multicultural life and women’s freedom of expression, mixing folk rock melodies and jazz groove with a touch of world music.

Sponsored in part by Jazz Generation, she’s giving access to the album for the very first time on Tuesday June 21st at 7 pm at Atlantic Brooklyn, collaborating with Jeff Miles on guitar, Julian Smith on bass and Daniel Jodocy on drums, the quartet creating a more electric and personalized sound that sits outside any particular musical era.
