LEFTOVER SALMON:

Few bands stick around for thirty years. Even fewer bands leave a legacy during that time that marks them as a truly special, once-in-lifetime type band. And no band has done all that and had as much fun as Leftover Salmon. Since their earliest days as a forward thinking, progressive bluegrass band who had the guts to add drums to the mix and who was unafraid to stir in any number of highly combustible styles into their ever evolving sound, to their role as a pioneer of the modern jamband scene, to their current status as elder-statesmen of the scene who cast a huge influential shadow over every festival they play, Leftover Salmon has been a crucial link in keeping alive the traditional music of the past while at the same time pushing that sound forward with their own weirdly, unique style.

In their fourth decade as a band, Leftover Salmon is showing no signs of slowing down, continuing to create new music in the studio, including the most recent release Brand New Good Old Days (Compass Records 2021). The latest album shows that Leftover Salmon is still proving it possible to recreate themselves without changing who they are. The band now features a lineup that has been together longer than any other in Salmon history and is one of the strongest the legendary band has ever assembled. Built around the core of founding members Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman, the band is now powered by banjo-wiz Andy Thorn, and driven by the steady rhythm section of bassist Greg Garrison, drummer Alwyn Robinson, and dobro player & keyboardist Jay Starling. The current lineup is continuing the long, storied history of Salmon which found them first emerging from the progressive bluegrass world and coming of age as one the original jam bands, before rising to become architects of what has become known as Jamgrass and helping to create a landscape where bands schooled in the traditional rules of bluegrass can break free of those bonds through nontraditional instrumentation and an innate ability to push songs in new psychedelic directions live. Salmon is a band who for more than thirty years has never stood still; they are constantly changing, evolving, and inspiring. If someone wanted to understand what Americana music is they could do no better than to go to a Leftover Salmon show, where they effortlessly glide from a bluegrass number born on the front porch, to the down-and-dirty Cajun swamps with a stop on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, to the hallowed halls of the Ryman in Nashville, before firing one up in the mountains of Colorado.

SHANNON WHITWORTH & WOODY PLATT:

Husband and wife duo, Woody Platt and Shannon Whitworth of Brevard, North Carolina, each have a unique history of musical accomplishments. A silver lining of the global pandemic has been more time at home, which has allowed them to play, write, record and perform together. They have curated a set of music comprised mostly of Whitworth’s original songs.

Shannon Whitworth’s swoon-inducing musical style found its first showcase in her Asheville-produced solo debut, 2007’s No Expectations. Followed by 2009’s critically-acclaimed Water Bound, an album that drew comparisons to Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball. Whitworth is a songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist.  She has garnered praise in outlets ranging from People magazine to Garden & Gun. Her honest reinterpretation of ‘Americana,’ a la Mark Knopfler meets Norah Jones and the ghost of Julie London, has garnered Whitworth prime appearances from Philadelphia Folk Festival to Yosemite’s Strawberry Music Festival to Nashville’s own Ryman Auditorium. Shannon is also an acclaimed artist and spends much of her time in her art studio these days. She was quoted in Walter Magazine saying,  “My art is how I see the world,” says artist and singer-songwriter Shannon Whitworth. “And my music is how I hear it.”

Woody Platt, a Brevard native, was a founding member of the Grammy award winning band Steep Canyon Rangers. The band started as a group of friends getting together to play music that they love while studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and blossomed into the highly successful and world-renowned musicians that they are today. The band toured the world on their own, and alongside the well known actor/comedian/musician Steve Martin. During Woody’s tenure with Steep Canyon Rangers, the band won multiple awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), a Grammy award with 3 total Grammy Nominations and were inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. Since retiring from the Steep Canyon Rangers in the summer of 2022 - Woody has been working on solo recording projects including a debut single “One Last Goodbye” which features an all star Bluegrass lineup and was written by Chris Stapleton. “One Last Goodbye” spent several months in the number one position on the Bluegrass charts.

TRAVIS BOOK & ANDY FALCO Play Jerry Garcia:

Andy Falco and Travis Book are both members of the Grammy award winning bluegrass band The Infamous Stringdusters. Inspired by their love of the music of Jerry Garcia, the duo has united to celebrate Garcia’s timeless songs, a legacy of music that spans five decades, hundreds of songs, and countless fans of all ages. Drawing from Garcia’s solo material, his Grateful Dead catalogue, as well as the traditional songs he loved to play, this evening of some of Jerry Garcia’s best-loved songs will be a testament to the iconic musical pioneer’s lasting impact on the music world.

JACK & ADAM LAWRENCE with CHARLOTTE BLUEGRASS ALLSTARS:

Jack Lawrence has been called a "flatpicking powerhouse." His recordings and performances combine exciting, high spirited and innovative guitar solos with tasteful phrasing in his own inventive style. Well known as Doc Watson's partner since the early 1980's, Jack's inspired playing and smooth vocals provide listeners with performances that span musical traditions. Jack grew up in Charlotte, NC and his professional experiences provided a wealth of opportunity and associations that continue to fuel his talents today. In the 1970’s, Jack was part of The New Deal String Band and Bluegrass Alliance. In 1978, he teamed with Joe Smothers in a relaxed folk duo. Smothers and Lawrence successfully toured and recorded throughout the country in the 1970's and 80's. Through Joe, Jack met Doc and Merle Watson and he began to tour with Doc in 1983 as Merle pursued other interests. Jack played side-by-side with Doc for over 25 years and the opportunity to partner with one of his most important musical influences was infinitely rewarding. The two musicians developed a brilliant guitar partnership, capitalizing on both their strengths. Jack's talents are featured on many of Doc's recordings, including the Grammy winner "On Praying Ground." The solo project "About Time," released in 1997, showcases Jack's amazing guitar style and rich, warm vocals. In 2001, he assembled some of the friends he most admires for an exciting recording project. These sessions resulted in the April 2002 release of "I Don't Need The Whiskey Anymore" featuring Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Tony Williamson, The Del McCoury Band and, of course, his old friend and partner, Doc Watson. Jack’s most recent project, “Arthel’s Guitar,” was released in 2013 and features tunes memorializing the first generation of Bluegrass, Country and Folk musicians that inspired him to play music.

CBA: In their short time as a band, The Charlotte Bluegrass Allstars are already turning the heads of audiences, peers, & mentors alike. Formed in 2022, the group has already performed to a near capacity crowd at Charlotte’s historic Neighborhood Theatre backing up bluegrass giant, Jack Lawrence, for the Doc Watson 100th Birthday Celebration “For the Love of Doc”, with additional performances with Lawrence planned for later in the year. Drawing from their combined influences and versatility, Steven & Chad deliver a dynamic enthusiasm in every song , with both also joining the southeastern Americana powerhouse, Time Sawyer, for their live shows in 2023. Rounding out the sound are Dennis, masterfully holding down the low end when he’s not playing with the Charlotte Symphony, and Jake, a longtime Merlefest vet with a stoic expertise on the dobro. CBA is currently self-releasing their own material with an energetic sound blending traditional elements with new grass innovation. With powerful rhythms, soulful singing, & intricately woven musicianship, The Charlotte Bluegrass Allstars are making waves across every stage they take in the southeast & beyond!
